Liveaboard vs resort diving
Both get you underwater. They're very different holidays. Here's how to choose.
Liveaboard — maximum diving
You live on the boat and dive 3–4 times a day, often reaching remote sites no day boat can. It's the most efficient diving there is: roll off the back, surface, eat, sleep, repeat.
- Best for: serious divers, remote destinations (Raja Ampat, the best Red Sea routes, far Maldives atolls), and anyone who wants to maximise dives.
- Trade-offs: you're at sea for the whole trip, cabins are compact, and it suits confident, reasonably experienced divers. Non-divers will be bored.
Resort / land-based — balance and flexibility
You stay on land and dive from day boats, usually 2 dives a morning, with afternoons free.
- Best for: newer divers, mixed couples (one dives, one doesn't), honeymooners, and anyone who wants beach, spa and dinner ashore.
- Trade-offs: fewer dives per day, and you're limited to sites within boat range.
A simple rule
- It's all about the diving, you're experienced, the site is remote → liveaboard.
- *You want diving and a holiday, or you're still building experience → resort*.
The honest takeaway
Be honest about how much you want to dive versus relax — and about your experience level. A liveaboard is the trip of a lifetime for the right diver and a long week for the wrong one.
